Things Won't Improve Until You Improve Them

A Closer Look
By Sean Simpson, Broken Arrow Senior Center President/CEO

We’re already one month into 2022. So far, it seems a lot like 2021. So far, it seems a lot like 2020 – yet nothing like 2019. If it’s all the same to you, I’d like to exchange this year for another one please. One with more potential. One with more possibilities. One with better ingredients that will result in a better cake. So far, it seems like the same stale cake I’ve had for two years. Almost everyone I talk to says they would like things to improve this year. I know because I asked three people in the checkout line at ALDI. When asked to elaborate as to “why” or “how,” I received one set of shrugged shoul - ders, a grumbled “I don’t know” and a request to return to pre-pandemic life. Here is what I decided: If I want things to be different, I need to be the one to make it happen. Things won’t improve until somebody improves them. Sure, we could tackle some big issues: fall in love; quit smoking; skydive; follow a dream; accept responsibility; spend more time with family; spend less time with family. Let’s start a little broader. What would happen if your list looked like this instead?
Make a Plan - Try to come up with some key ideas you can draw inspiration from and take charge of your health. Focus on areas when short-term success can lead to long-term benefits. Try cutting back on something you don’t enjoy doing or do something extra instead. Get Organized - Spend 15 minutes every morning organizing one thing – a file, drawer or closet – until it’s done. Then move on to the next project. I’d do this, but, an hour later, I’d be on drawer four. Get in Shape - You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. Hockey great Wayne Gretzky said that. You miss 100% of the sit-ups you never attempt. Sean Simpson said that. He shouldn’t say that. He should say that any exercise is probably better than no exercise – but ask your health care professional before starting a new program. Continue Reading....
